The Journeyman Electrician Position
As a Journeyman Electrician with MMR Group, your role is pivotal in executing and managing electrical projects throughout the Oakland area and its neighboring cities. Your day-to-day responsibilities will involve complex installations, maintenance, and troubleshooting of electrical systems, with a strong focus on renewable energy projects such as solar and energy storage systems. You will work in diverse environments, from bustling commercial properties in downtown Oakland to expansive industrial sites in nearby San Leandro.

You will report to a Senior Electrician or Project Manager, who will support your development and ensure project goals are met. Core Journeyman Electrician Responsibilities
- Renewable Energy Systems: Install, maintain, and troubleshoot renewable energy systems for commercial properties, including solar panels, energy storage systems, and inverters.
- Conduit and Wiring: Route and install conduit (EMT, rigid) and wiring for high-voltage DC and AC systems.
- System Testing: Perform system testing and commissioning for solar arrays, ensuring optimal energy output and compliance with local regulations.
- Collaboration: Collaborate with engineers and project managers to design and implement energy-efficient electrical solutions.
- BESS Installation: Install and maintain battery energy storage systems (BESS) and integrate them with building power systems.
- Preventive Maintenance: Conduct preventive maintenance on renewable energy equipment, including replacing faulty components and ensuring proper grounding.
- Supervision: Supervise apprentices, ensuring adherence to safety standards and proper installation techniques.
- Reporting: Prepare detailed reports on system performance and maintenance activities.
Advanced Technical Duties
- Execute complex electrical troubleshooting using advanced diagnostic tools and techniques.
- Design and implement custom electrical solutions for unique project requirements.
- Integrate renewable energy systems with existing electrical infrastructure.
- Conduct advanced system simulations to predict energy output and optimize performance.
Regional Project Specifics
Our projects often involve collaboration with local municipalities in Oakland and surrounding areas, requiring adherence to specific regional codes and standards. Familiarity with local energy initiatives and incentives is a plus.
Safety Protocols
Safety is our top priority. You will ensure compliance with MMR Group’s rigorous safety protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), adherence to OSHA guidelines, and participation in regular safety training sessions.
Required Experience & Skills
- Must have a valid California Journeyman Certification from the Department of Industrial Relations.
- Extensive knowledge of NEC and renewable energy codes, including solar and battery storage regulations.
- Experience with solar panel installations, inverters, and high-voltage DC systems.
- Proficiency with multimeters, megohmmeters, and other diagnostic tools.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, electrical schematics, and energy system diagrams.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail for troubleshooting and system optimization.
- Minimum of 4 years of experience as a Journeyman Electrician.
Essential Certifications
- OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety Certification
- CPR and First Aid Certification
Required Technical Knowledge
- Understanding of grid-tied and off-grid solar systems.
- Familiarity with energy management software and tools.
- Knowledge of battery chemistry and storage solutions.
Tools & Equipment
- Daily Tools: Multimeters, wire strippers, conduit benders, and power drills are essential for daily tasks.
- Personal Tools: Journeyman Electricians are expected to provide their own hand tools, including screwdrivers, pliers, and wrenches.
- Company-Provided Equipment: MMR Group supplies specialized equipment such as hydraulic crimpers, cable testers, and PPE.
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds regularly.
- Work conditions may include heights, confined spaces, and outdoor environments.
- Safety gear, including hard hats, safety glasses, and gloves, is mandatory.
