The Journeyman Electrician Position

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

As a Journeyman Electrician at Howell Electric, you will be at the forefront of electrical construction and maintenance. Your daily tasks will include installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting electrical systems with a focus on renewable energy solutions. You will engage in both hands-on work and strategic planning, ensuring projects are completed safely, efficiently, and to the highest standards.

Core Journeyman Electrician Responsibilities

• Renewable Energy Systems: Install, maintain, and troubleshoot renewable energy systems for commercial properties, including solar panels, energy storage systems, and inverters.
• Conduit and Wiring Installation: Route and install conduit (EMT, rigid) and wiring for high-voltage DC and AC systems, ensuring compliance with local regulations.
• System Testing and Commissioning: Perform system testing and commissioning for solar arrays, ensuring optimal energy output and compliance with local regulations.
• Collaboration with Engineers: Work closely with engineers and project managers to design and implement energy-efficient electrical solutions.
• Battery Energy Storage Systems: Install and maintain battery energy storage systems (BESS) and integrate them with building power systems.
• Preventive Maintenance: Conduct preventive maintenance on renewable energy equipment, including replacing faulty components and ensuring proper grounding.
• Supervision of Apprentices: Supervise apprentices, ensuring adherence to safety standards and proper installation techniques.
• Advanced Technical Duties: Perform advanced troubleshooting of complex electrical systems, design custom electrical solutions for unique project requirements, and implement cutting-edge technologies in renewable energy.
• Regional Project Specifics: Engage in projects that support the community’s sustainability goals, such as large-scale solar installations in Cathedral City and energy-efficient building retrofits in Palm Desert.
• Safety Protocols: Adhere to strict safety protocols, including lockout/tagout procedures, use of personal protective equipment, and compliance with OSHA standards.

Required Experience & Skills

• Certification: Must have a valid California Journeyman Certification from the Department of Industrial Relations.
• Knowledge of Codes: Extensive knowledge of NEC and renewable energy codes, including solar and battery storage regulations.
• Technical Experience: Experience with solar panel installations, inverters, and high-voltage DC systems.
• Diagnostic Tools: Proficiency with multimeters, megohmmeters, and other diagnostic tools.
• Blueprint Reading: Ability to read and interpret blueprints, electrical schematics, and energy system diagrams.
• Problem-Solving Skills: Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail for troubleshooting and system optimization.
• Experience: 4+ years minimum experience as a Journeyman Electrician.

Tools & Equipment

• Daily Tools: Journeyman Electricians use tools such as wire strippers, conduit benders, and power drills daily.
• Personal Tools: Electricians are expected to have their own set of hand tools, including screwdrivers, pliers, and wrenches.

Physical Requirements

• Lifting Requirements: Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds regularly and perform tasks that require physical strength and stamina.
