The Journeyman Electrician Position
As a Journeyman Electrician with TEC Electric, you will be an integral part of a team that values skill, dedication, and innovation. Your day-to-day responsibilities will include installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting electrical systems, with a focus on renewable energy projects. You will work in a variety of environments, including commercial properties and industrial settings, often collaborating with engineers and project managers. Core Journeyman Electrician Responsibilities
As a Journeyman Electrician, you will be responsible for:
- Installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting renewable energy systems, such as solar panels, energy storage systems, and inverters, for commercial properties.
- Routing and installing conduit (EMT, rigid) and wiring for high-voltage DC and AC systems.
- Performing system testing and commissioning for solar arrays to ensure optimal energy output and compliance with local regulations.
- Collaborating with engineers and project managers to design and implement energy-efficient electrical solutions.
- Installing and maintaining battery energy storage systems (BESS) and integrating them with building power systems.
- Conducting preventive maintenance on renewable energy equipment, including replacing faulty components and ensuring proper grounding.
- Supervising apprentices, ensuring adherence to safety standards and proper installation techniques.
- Preparing detailed reports on system performance and maintenance activities.
Advanced technical duties include:
- Implementing complex energy management systems to optimize energy use.
- Conducting advanced troubleshooting using diagnostic software and tools.
- Designing custom electrical solutions for unique project requirements.
- Participating in regional projects, such as the integration of renewable energy systems in San Diego’s business districts and surrounding areas.
Safety is a top priority at TEC Electric. Our electricians adhere to rigorous safety protocols, including wearing PPE, following lockout/tagout procedures, and conducting regular safety audits to ensure a secure working environment.
Required Experience & Skills
Candidates must have:
- A valid California Journeyman Certification from the Department of Industrial Relations.
- Extensive knowledge of NEC and renewable energy codes, including solar and battery storage regulations.
- Experience with solar panel installations, inverters, and high-voltage DC systems.
- Proficiency with multimeters, megohmmeters, and other diagnostic tools.
- The ability to read and interpret blueprints, electrical schematics, and energy system diagrams.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail for troubleshooting and system optimization.
- A minimum of 4+ years of experience as a Journeyman Electrician.
- Essential certifications, including OSHA 30, CPR, and First Aid.
Tools & Equipment
Our Journeyman Electricians use a variety of tools daily, including:
- Multimeters, megohmmeters, and clamp meters.
- Wire strippers, conduit benders, and crimping tools.
- Personal protective equipment (PPE) such as hard hats, gloves, and safety glasses.
TEC Electric provides specialized equipment as needed, but electricians are expected to supply their own basic hand tools.
Physical Requirements
Journeyman Electricians at TEC Electric should be capable of:
- Lifting up to 50 pounds regularly.
- Working in various conditions, including outdoor sites, confined spaces, and at heights.
- Wearing appropriate safety gear, including steel-toed boots, high-visibility vests, and fall protection equipment when necessary.

Compensation Package
We offer a competitive salary range of $32.15-$37.29 per hour, depending on experience, with opportunities for career advancement and ongoing training. Overtime is available and compensated at premium rates. TEC Electric also provides tool allowances and additional perks, such as health benefits, paid time off, and participation in our employee wellness program.
