The Journeyman Electrician Position

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

As a Journeyman Electrician with Helix Electric, your day-to-day responsibilities will encompass a wide range of electrical tasks. From installing and maintaining renewable energy systems to troubleshooting electrical issues, your role is vital in ensuring the successful completion of high-profile projects. You will work closely with engineers and project managers to implement energy-efficient solutions and contribute to the overall success of the team.

You will work on projects that vary from large commercial installations to innovative renewable energy systems. The environments will range from construction sites to fully operational commercial facilities, requiring adaptability and a keen eye for safety and efficiency.

Core Journeyman Electrician Responsibilities

  • Installation and Maintenance: Install, maintain, and troubleshoot renewable energy systems for commercial properties, including solar panels, energy storage systems, and inverters.
  • Conduit and Wiring: Route and install conduit (EMT, rigid) and wiring for high-voltage DC and AC systems.
  • System Testing and Commissioning: Perform system testing and commissioning for solar arrays, ensuring optimal energy output and compliance with local regulations.
  • Collaboration with Engineers: Work collaboratively with engineers and project managers to design and implement energy-efficient electrical solutions.
  • Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS): Install and maintain BESS and integrate them with building power systems.
  • Preventive Maintenance: Conduct preventive maintenance on renewable energy equipment, replacing faulty components and ensuring proper grounding.
  • Supervision and Safety: Supervise apprentices, ensuring adherence to safety standards and proper installation techniques. Prepare detailed reports on system performance and maintenance activities.
  • Advanced Technical Duties: Implement advanced diagnostic techniques using infrared thermography and power quality analysis. Lead the installation of smart grid technologies and energy management systems. Facilitate advanced troubleshooting of complex electrical systems.
  • Regional Project Specifics: Projects may include retrofitting historical buildings in Palo Alto with energy-efficient systems and developing new solar farms in the surrounding areas.
  • Safety Protocols: Adhere to strict safety protocols, including PPE usage, lockout/tagout procedures, and adherence to OSHA guidelines.

Required Experience & Skills

  • Certification and Experience: Must have a valid California Journeyman Certification from the Department of Industrial Relations and a minimum of 4 years of experience as a Journeyman Electrician.
  • Technical Proficiency: Extensive knowledge of NEC and renewable energy codes, including solar and battery storage regulations. Experience with solar panel installations, inverters, and high-voltage DC systems.
  • Diagnostic Tools: Proficiency with multimeters, megohmmeters, and other diagnostic tools.
  • Blueprint and Schematic Reading: Ability to read and interpret blueprints, electrical schematics, and energy system diagrams.
  • Problem-Solving Skills: Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail for troubleshooting and system optimization.

Tools & Equipment

  • Daily Tools: Journeyman Electricians use tools such as wire strippers, pliers, conduit benders, and voltage testers.
  • Personal Tools: Required personal tools include a tool belt, assorted screwdrivers, and a multimeter.
  • Company-Provided Equipment: Helix Electric provides specialized equipment like ladders, safety harnesses, and power drills.

Physical Requirements

  • Lifting Requirements: Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds regularly and perform physical tasks such as climbing ladders and working in confined spaces.
