The Journeyman Electrician Position

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

As a Journeyman Electrician at ChargePoint, your daily responsibilities include installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting electrical systems specifically designed for EV charging stations. You’ll be the backbone of our operations, ensuring that each project is executed with precision and efficiency.

Core Journeyman Electrician Responsibilities

  • EV Charging Station Installation: Install, maintain, and troubleshoot electrical systems for EV charging stations, including service panels, transformers, and related components.

  • Conduit Work: Accurately measure, cut, and bend conduit (EMT, rigid) for installations, ensuring precise alignment for efficient and safe electrical pathways.

  • Wiring and Testing: Pull, label, and terminate wiring, maintaining clean and organized connections according to NEC and California Electric Code standards. Conduct system testing to verify performance, safety, and compliance with site specifications.

  • Load Calculations and Supervision: Perform load calculations and install main service equipment for EV charging infrastructure. Supervise apprentices, ensuring safety and best practices while mentoring on EV-specific electrical systems.

  • Advanced Technical Duties: Optimize energy management systems, integrate smart grid technologies, and implement renewable energy solutions in EV charging setups. Adapt installations to accommodate regional seismic requirements, ensuring robustness and reliability.

  • Regional Project Specifics: Engage in projects across Long Beach, Lakewood, and Carson, adapting to diverse local codes and customer needs, ensuring each installation is tailored to its environment.

  • Safety Protocols: Adhere to rigorous safety standards, conducting site assessments and implementing safety measures to protect team members and the public during all phases of installation.

Required Experience & Skills

To excel in this role, you must possess an active and valid journeyman electrician certification from the California Department of Industrial Relations (DIR). A strong knowledge of NEC and California Electric Code is essential, with specific experience in EV charging station installations. You should be proficient with conduit bending tools, multimeters, and other diagnostic equipment, and have the ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and electrical diagrams. Leadership skills are vital, as you’ll supervise apprentices and manage on-site safety, ensuring all projects meet our high standards. Excellent communication and organizational skills are necessary to coordinate effectively with team members and clients.

Minimum Experience

  • A minimum of 3-5 years of experience as a Journeyman Electrician.

Essential Certifications

  • California DIR Journeyman Electrician Certification.

  • OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety Certification.

Technical Knowledge

  • In-depth understanding of EV-specific electrical systems, energy management, and renewable integration.

Tools & Equipment

Our Journeyman Electricians utilize a variety of tools daily, including conduit benders, wire strippers, multimeters, and oscilloscopes. Personal tools such as screwdrivers, pliers, and voltage detectors are required. ChargePoint provides advanced equipment like thermal imaging cameras and power quality analyzers to ensure precise diagnostics and installations.

Physical Requirements

The role requires the ability to lift up to 50 pounds, work in various conditions, including outdoors and confined spaces, and adhere to safety standards. Safety gear such as hard hats, gloves, and safety glasses is mandatory on all job sites.
