The Cable Installer Position

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

As a Cable Installer on our team, your daily routine will involve the meticulous installation of structured cabling systems. You will be tasked with setting up and maintaining Cat5e, Cat6, and fiber optics, ensuring high-speed data transfer and network stability.

Core Cable Installer Responsibilities

  • Install Structured Cabling Systems: Set up Cat5e, Cat6, and fiber optics in both new and retrofit environments.
  • Terminate and Test Cables: Use precision tools and testers to ensure all copper and fiber optic cables function correctly.
  • Mount and Label Equipment: Secure network racks, patch panels, and label them for easy identification.
  • Install Cable Management Systems: Set up cable trays and ladder rack systems, ensuring proper support and routing.
  • Cable Management: Dress and bundle cables neatly to meet industry and site-specific standards.
  • Blueprint Interpretation: Read and follow construction blueprints and cabling diagrams to complete installations accurately.
  • Advanced Technical Duties: Perform signal testing, troubleshoot connectivity issues, and integrate cabling with smart building systems.
  • Regional Project Specifics: Work on projects that utilize Charleston’s unique architectural styles, requiring adaptability in installation techniques.
  • Safety Protocols: Adhere to OSHA standards, use personal protective equipment (PPE), and participate in regular safety training sessions.

Required Experience & Skills

  • Experience: Minimum of 3-5 years as a Cable Installer.
  • Certifications: BICSI Installer 2, Fiber Optics Installer (FOI), and OSHA 10 certification.
  • Technical Knowledge: Proficiency in terminating fiber and copper, knowledge of TIA/EIA cabling standards, and ability to read network blueprints.
  • Organizational Skills: Efficient management of tools and inventory is essential.

Tools & Equipment

  • Daily Tools: Crimping tools, fiber optic cleavers, testers, and punch-down tools.
  • Required Personal Tools: Basic hand tools such as screwdrivers and pliers.
  • Company-Provided Equipment: Precision testers, power drills, and safety gear are supplied by Tech Electronics.

Physical Requirements

  • Lifting Requirements: Ability to lift up to 50 lbs regularly.
  • Working Conditions: Work in various environments, including outdoor sites and confined spaces.
  • Safety Gear: Hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, and steel-toed boots are required.
