The Journeyman Electrician Position

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

A Journeyman Electrician at Howell Electric is responsible for various tasks, including installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting complex electrical systems. You will work on renewable energy projects, particularly solar installations, ensuring that every component functions optimally. Your role involves routing and installing conduits and wiring for high-voltage systems, performing system testing, and commissioning solar arrays.

Core Journeyman Electrician Responsibilities

• Install, Maintain, and Troubleshoot Renewable Energy Systems: Work on solar panels, energy storage systems, and inverters for commercial properties.
• Route and Install Conduit and Wiring: Handle high-voltage DC and AC systems using EMT and rigid conduits.
• Perform System Testing and Commissioning: Ensure solar arrays deliver optimal energy output and comply with local regulations.
• Collaborate with Engineers and Project Managers: Design and implement energy-efficient electrical solutions.
• Install and Maintain Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS): Integrate these systems with building power systems.
• Conduct Preventive Maintenance: Replace faulty components and ensure proper grounding.
• Supervise Apprentices: Ensure safety standards and proper installation techniques.

Advanced Technical Duties

• Design custom electrical solutions for high-efficiency energy systems in collaboration with the engineering team.

• Certification: Must have a valid California Journeyman Certification from the Department of Industrial Relations.

• Experience: Minimum of 4+ years as a Journeyman Electrician, with specific experience in solar panel installations and high-voltage DC systems.
• Technical Proficiency: Ability to read and interpret blueprints, electrical schematics, and energy system diagrams.
• Problem-Solving Skills: Strong attention to detail for troubleshooting and system optimization.

Tools & Equipment

• Daily Tools: Multimeters, megohmmeters, wire strippers, and crimping tools.
• Personal Tools: Journeyman Electricians are expected to have basic personal hand tools.
• Company-Provided Equipment: Specialized diagnostic tools, safety gear, and larger equipment such as conduit benders are provided by Howell Electric.

Physical Requirements

• Lifting Requirements: Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds regularly.
• Working Conditions: Work in various environments, including outdoor and confined spaces, often requiring extended periods of standing or bending.
• Safety Gear: PPE, including hard hats, safety glasses, and gloves, is mandatory.
