The Cable Tech Position
As a Cable Tech at Howell Electric, you will be at the forefront of our electrical and cabling operations. Your day-to-day responsibilities will include installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting structured cabling systems. You’ll work on diverse projects, from high-rise developments to expansive industrial sites, ensuring that each project is completed with precision and efficiency. Our team structure is designed to support collaboration and mentorship, with experienced professionals guiding newer team members. Supervision is provided by senior Cable Techs and project managers, fostering an environment of continuous learning and growth. Core Cable Tech Responsibilities
- Install Structured Cabling Systems: Adeptly install Cat5e, Cat6, and fiber optics cabling systems, ensuring robust and reliable network infrastructures.
- Terminate and Test Fiber Connections: Utilize Fluke equipment to terminate and test fiber connections, guaranteeing optimal performance.
- Network Racks and Cable Tray Systems: Skillfully install and dress network racks and set up cable tray systems for organized and efficient cabling solutions.
- Project Documentation: Create detailed as-built plans and maintain accurate project documentation for future reference and compliance.
- Lead Small Project Teams: Take initiative in leading small project teams, ensuring that projects meet deadlines and quality standards.
- Advanced Technical Duties: Engage in advanced tasks such as designing custom cabling layouts, integrating cabling with advanced network hardware, and troubleshooting complex network issues.
- Regional Project Specifics: Work on projects involving state-of-the-art technology installations in Silicon Valley tech firms and energy-efficient retrofits in eco-friendly buildings.
- Safety Protocols: Adhere to stringent safety protocols, including wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), conducting regular safety drills, and maintaining a hazard-free worksite.
Required Experience & Skills
- Experience: Minimum of 3-5 years as a Cable Tech, with extensive experience in structured cabling systems.
- Technical Proficiency: Proficient in terminating both fiber and copper cables and knowledgeable about TIA/EIA cabling standards.
- Blueprint Reading: Ability to accurately read and interpret network blueprints and schematics.
- Organizational Skills: Strong organizational skills for effective management of tools, inventory, and project resources.
- Certifications: Essential certifications include BICSI Technician, OSHA 10 or 30, and Fluke Networks Certified Cabling Test Technician (CCTT).
- Technical Knowledge: Comprehensive understanding of network protocols, signal flow, and cabling standards.
Tools & Equipment
- Daily Tools: Cable testers, punch-down tools, wire strippers, and crimpers are used daily by our Cable Techs.
- Personal Tools: Required personal tools include a set of screwdrivers, pliers, and a cordless drill.
- Company-Provided Equipment: Howell Electric provides advanced testing equipment, ladders, and safety gear to ensure our team is equipped for success.
Physical Requirements
- Lifting Requirements: Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds repeatedly throughout the day.
- Working Conditions: Comfortable working in various environments, from construction sites to finished office spaces, often requiring work at heights or in confined spaces.
- Safety Gear: Mandatory use of safety gear such as hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, and steel-toed boots.
