Your Daily Tasks as a Journeyman Electrician

Installation and Maintenance of Renewable Energy Systems

Your primary responsibility will be to install, maintain, and troubleshoot renewable energy systems. This includes solar panels, energy storage systems, and inverters. You’ll work with a range of systems to ensure they are operating at peak efficiency and comply with all local regulations.

Routing and Installation of Electrical Conduits and Wiring

You’ll route and install conduit, including EMT and rigid, and wiring for both high-voltage DC and AC systems. Your expertise in this area will ensure safe and efficient electrical installations.

System Testing and Commissioning

Performing system testing and commissioning for solar arrays will be a key part of your role. You’ll ensure optimal energy output and compliance with industry standards, making sure every system runs smoothly from installation to operation.

Collaboration and Design Implementation

Working closely with engineers and project managers, you’ll help design and implement energy-efficient electrical solutions. Your input will be crucial in integrating systems seamlessly into existing infrastructures.

Supervision and Reporting

You’ll supervise apprentices, guiding them to adhere to safety standards and proper installation techniques. Additionally, you’ll prepare detailed reports on system performance and maintenance activities, keeping all stakeholders informed.

Common Daily Activities

• Troubleshooting and Repair: Quickly identify and fix issues with electrical systems to minimize downtime.

• Equipment Calibration: Regularly calibrate and maintain diagnostic tools to ensure accurate readings and diagnostics.

What You Need to Be a Journeyman Electrician

To excel in this role, you must hold a valid California Journeyman Certification from the Department of Industrial Relations. You should have extensive knowledge of the NEC and renewable energy codes, particularly those related to solar and battery storage. Experience with solar panel installations, inverters, and high-voltage DC systems is essential.

Must-Have Skills

• Proficiency with Diagnostic Tools: Skilled in using multimeters, megohmmeters, and other diagnostic equipment.
• Blueprint and Schematic Reading: Ability to accurately read and interpret blueprints, electrical schematics, and energy system diagrams.
