The Data Center Tech Position

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

As a Data Center Tech at Helix Electric, your day-to-day tasks will involve installing, maintaining, and optimizing complex data center systems. You will be responsible for ensuring the efficiency and reliability of data center operations by meticulously managing server racks, cabling, and power distribution units (PDUs).

Core Data Center Tech Responsibilities

Installation and Maintenance

  • Install and maintain server racks, ensuring stability and accessibility.
  • Route and secure high-density cabling to optimize performance and reliability.
  • Set up and configure PDUs to ensure efficient power distribution.

Advanced Technical Duties

  • Perform advanced cable testing using Fluke tools to ensure network integrity.
  • Document network layouts and connections with precision and accuracy.
  • Implement and adhere to strict data center cleanliness and safety standards.
  • Manage and troubleshoot power and cooling systems to prevent downtime.

Regional Project Specifics

Our projects often include collaboration with regional data centers that require customized solutions for power and network configurations. You’ll be instrumental in adapting our services to meet these specialized needs.

Safety Protocols

Safety is paramount at Helix Electric. You will follow rigorous safety protocols to ensure a secure working environment, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and adherence to company safety guidelines.

Required Experience & Skills

Experience and Knowledge

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience as a Data Center Tech.
  • In-depth knowledge of power and cooling systems in data center environments.
  • Proficiency with cable testers and network configuration tools.
  • Ability to follow and create precise documentation protocols.

Essential Certifications

  • CompTIA Server+
  • BICSI Technician Certification
  • Data Center Certified Associate (DCCA)

Technical Knowledge

  • Understanding of network topologies and configurations.
  • Familiarity with data center infrastructure management (DCIM) software.

Tools & Equipment

Daily Tools

  • Cable testers (e.g., Fluke Network Testers)
  • Crimping tools and wire cutters
  • Network analyzers

Personal Tools

  • Basic hand tools for installation and maintenance.
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves, helmets, and safety glasses.

  • Laptops and tablets for network configuration and documentation.
  • Specialized testing equipment and software.

Physical Requirements

Lifting Requirements

  • Ability to lift and carry equipment up to 50 lbs frequently.
