What You’ll Do as a Cable Installer
Overview of the Role
As a Cable Installer at Granite State Electric, you’ll play a crucial role in our multi-year project in Wake Forest, NC, with potential assignments in nearby cities including Raleigh, Durham, and Cary. Your primary responsibility is to ensure seamless installation and maintenance of structured cabling systems that support our commercial and industrial clients. This position offers a blend of hands-on technical work and collaboration with project teams to deliver top-notch cabling infrastructure.
Your Daily Tasks as a Cable Installer
Installing and Terminating Cables
Your day will revolve around the installation of structured cabling systems, including Cat5e, Cat6, and fiber optics. You’ll expertly terminate and test copper and fiber optic cables, using precision tools and advanced testers to ensure connectivity and performance.
Organizing and Securing Infrastructure
You’ll be responsible for mounting, securing, and organizing network racks, patch panels, and cable trays. A significant part of your role will be dressing and bundling cables neatly to meet both site-specific and industry standards, ensuring a professional and efficient setup.
Troubleshooting and Problem-Solving
Expect to troubleshoot and resolve connectivity issues during and after installations. This can involve diagnosing problems, making necessary adjustments, and conducting tests to ensure the system is operational and meets client specifications.
Reading and Interpreting Blueprints
Your ability to read and interpret blueprints and construction diagrams is critical. This skill ensures accurate installations that align with project requirements and customer expectations.
Coordination and Documentation
Coordinating with project teams to integrate cabling systems into larger infrastructure projects is a daily task. Additionally, you’ll maintain detailed installation records and ensure adherence to quality and safety protocols.

- Conducting site surveys to assess installation requirements.
- Performing regular maintenance checks on installed systems.
- Keeping track of inventory and managing tools efficiently.
What You Need to Be a Cable Installer
Experience and Expertise
To excel in this role, you’ll need at least 3-5 years of experience as a Cable Installer. Your expertise should include extensive knowledge of structured cabling, proficiency in terminating and testing fiber optics, and a solid understanding of TIA/EIA cabling standards.
Must-Have Skills
- Strong troubleshooting skills to quickly identify and resolve issues.
- Excellent organizational ability to manage tools, inventory, and installation schedules.
