What You’ll Do as a RCP Motor Mechanic

As a RCP Motor Mechanic at Burdett Hill, you’ll be a crucial part of our team working on a long-term project in Smithfield, VA, with additional opportunities in nearby cities such as Newport News, Hampton, and Suffolk. Your role is critical in ensuring the operational efficiency and safety of reactor coolant pumps through meticulous mechanical work. Your Daily Tasks as a RCP Motor Mechanic

Motor Disassembly and Reassembly

Your primary task will involve disassembling and reassembling vertical motors up to 12,000 HP (13.2kw Voltage). Each motor is vital to our operations, and your expertise in handling these machines will be essential to maintaining plant safety and performance.

Handling and Safety with Radioactive Materials

Working safely around radioactive materials is part of the job. You’ll be required to use proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and adhere to stringent safety protocols to protect yourself and your colleagues.

Troubleshooting and Maintenance

You’ll tackle various troubleshooting tasks, such as identifying and fixing oil leaks and addressing vibration issues. Conducting incoming and outgoing test runs on motors will be routine, ensuring everything operates smoothly and safely.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Precision Installation: Accurate installation of motors and ensuring alignment with system requirements.
  • Routine Maintenance Checks: Performing regular maintenance checks to identify potential issues before they become problems.
  • Documentation: Keeping detailed records of all work performed, including tests and repairs.

What You Need to Be a RCP Motor Mechanic

Educational and Training Requirements

A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Additionally, you’ll need to complete Radiological Worker Training annually to stay updated on safety practices and regulations.

Experience and Skills

  • Hands-On Experience: A minimum of 5 years working with motors and pumps is essential.
  • Technical Proficiency: Proficient use of M&TE equipment, including dial indicators, micrometers, and torque wrenches, is a must.
  • Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to troubleshoot complex mechanical issues quickly and efficiently.
